To the maps! I-90 west from Butte to Missoula, MT, then north on US93 to Kalispell, MT, then US2 to West Glacier, MT. 272 miles.
Now, we know that US1 runs north and south through Cary, NC on its way from Maine to Florida. Does anyone know the start-finish for US2? I suspect that US1 is the easternmost US highway and US2 the northernmost.
The part of today's journey from Butte to Missoula on I-90 was a true pleasure. The road was smooth the hills and curves gentle and the scenery soothing. The trip from Missoula to West Glacier, OTOH, was a challenge. 14 miles of pavementless construction and 100 miles of hill after hill and curve after curve.
The best part of the trip was the many miles we paralleled Flathead Lake. Here's why:
Here's a little bit about the Flathead (Salish) tribe for which the lake is named.
We arrived at our campground around 4:30, got settled in then realized that we were short of pictures for the blog! So, off to Glacier NP for some reconnoitering and evening picture taking.
Here are the results.
Some of you know that we have been having a love-hate relationship with the road through the GNP known as the Going-to-the-Sun-Road. Love it because of the spectacular scenery it traverses, hate it because it is so often closed -- including the last three years. It is open now, though as we found this afternoon, it is still under construction. We also found out that it is scheduled to close again Sunday! The picture above shows where the Going-to-the-Sun Road goes! Yes, from left to right about 2/3 of the way up you can almost see the road.
Here are some of the sights along the way:
