Colorado National Monument

We got back on track today with a visit to the Colorado National Monument. First, to clear the air, there is no "Monument". Go here for an explanation of "National Monument".

The Colorado National Monument is located between Fruita, CO and Grand Junction, CO, just south of the Colorado River which helped to form it over more than a million years. The rim drive meanders along the tops of the canyons that make up the Monument, offering spectacular views down into the rock formation and the valleys.

Here are some of the views we had today:

How we got to the top.

Independence Monument.

Shadows, Colors, and Erosions.

Chimney Rocks.

600 ton Balancing Rock.

Balancing Rock from the top.

Keyhole. How do they do that?

CNM's own Monument Valley.

Ute Valley. When you enlarge, you'll see Grand Junction and a perfect alignment with I-70 East!

And of course MMG makes friends wherever she goes. Here are three:

And, of course the flowers! It is just now Spring here:

Need help identifying this plant/flower. Only one of its kind we've seen. Sorry about the picture quality. I didn't realize at the time that it would be important!

To wrap up the day, we came home to a dust storm kicked up by thunderstorms in the area. There were reports of a tornado about 8 miles north of here, but nothing like that here. We only got enough rain to make the dust stick to everything!

We had left the awning out to try to help keep the temp in the moho down on another 90+ day. We were concerned that the high winds might wreck it despite the "automatic retract" feature we have. We were partly right. The "automatic retract" did not. No damage, though, and we got it safely stowed.

Still no plans for tomorrow, so it will be a surprise to us both!

Be well.

MMG and DDG
