Moving Day! Capitol Reef NP to Grand Junction, CO

For you map guys, find Torrey, UT at the intersection of UT 12 and UT 24, then east and north on UT 24 to I70 east to Grand Junction. 204 miles, 24.2 gals., 8.2 mpg. Passed the 30,000 mile mark on the moho odometer today.

We came this way so we could have a visit with Uncle Jim and Aunt Jackie now that AJ is home from the hospital and getting around better. We'll get together with them tomorrow for lunch and the afternoon.

The trip over here from Torrey covered some rough territory as shown here:

Ancient volcanic ash turned to rock.

Looks like volcanic ash on the bottom and sandstone on the top. At one time this area was a sand desert larger than the Sahara, thus the sandstone.

Here's a sandstone formation that's behind the curve on eroding into sand like its surroundings.

Where did the road go?

You can tell where the water is out here -- look for the green!

Just a formation I like.

Note the many layers of different colors.

Each one of these layers represents a longtime flood, either by lake or ocean, depositing silt on the floor, then drying up and allowing the sediment to turn to rock, then flooding again to restart the cycle. Lots of layers, lots of time.....

Thanks to all of you who responded to the email. I was pleasantly surprised. The Blog lives on!
