Yellowstone NP, Day 1

To help understand and follow our ramblings over the next couple of weeks, you would really enjoy perusing this site, including clicking on the "View Map" icon located in the lower left corner of the green header.

What a day! Started by getting frustrated by the traffic jams caused by the "newbies" (those visiting the Park for the first time) who stop in the middle of the road to gawk at the first Buffalo they see. They don't know yet that by the end of the day they will consider the Buffaloes a nuisance!

That said, here's a couple of examples of why they stop:

Buffalo herd resting along the Madison River

No Words.

A.Why they get to a be nuisance.
B. An addition to MMG's locally world famous collection of wildlife butts.

Eventually, we got through the Madison River Valley traffic jams and when we reached the Grand Loop Road that circles the Park, traffic cleared and we had smooth going the rest of the day.

Among the better sights today are these:

Gibbon Falls.

Our Lunch view today.

Lunch view, II.

What we were seeing during lunch. There will be more of this Canyon over the next few days.

On the way home this afternoon, we came across this large herd of Elk. As we watched, they spread out across the meadow, then divided into two herds, one heading west and the other east.

A few couldn't decide which herd to join!

Other highlights today were:

A, Seeing three Ospreys soaring above the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, chasing one another, diving, dodging, and flying upside down. Don't know whether it was a territorial fight or a mating rite, but it was fun to watch. Alas, no pictures.

B. Arriving at a viewing pull off in Hayden Valley just as the Grizzly Bear(s) disappeared over the horizon! Drat! Maybe tomorrow.

C. Discovering that the Canyon Village General Store has peppermint stick ice cream! Yum!

D. Leaving the campground in sunny, warm weather which lasted through lunch, then shortly after getting under a thunderstorm that drove the temperature down to 43 and pelted us with huge slushy raindrops. We were really thankful that it was not hail! Thirty minutes later the skies cleared and the temp was back in the 60's.

We'll try to do better tomorrow!
