Received a reminder (only one) from a reader who wanted to know why I stopped giving the miles traveled and fuel usage the past couple of days. Simple answer: I just forgot.
So, here they are:
Grand Junction, CO, to Ogden, UT:
303 miles, 38.3 gals., 7.9 mpg. Altitude change: -350 ft.
Ogden, UT, to West Yellowstone, MT:
308 miles, 42.4 gals., 7.3 mpg. Altitude change: +2363 ft.
The fuel usage and mpg is calculated by the Freightliner onboard computer and almost never agrees with what happens at the refill pump on a tank by tank basis, However, over a multi-thousand mile period it averages out to near agreement.
Having observed the mileage (why is it mileage with the e, but usage without the e ?) over the last 30,000 miles, it appears that changes in elevation have more impact on overall mileage (that would be fuel usage) than any change in driving methods, i.e., heavy foot, shift patterns, speed traveled, etc. The second biggest impact on mileage is wind and a headwind kills mileage a lot more than a tailwind helps.
Now we have to get out there and look for wildlife for you!
Hve a great day!
